It just so happens that the exurbanleague.com folks reside in the same metro area that we do, and when I saw their generous offer to learn to shoot on their site, Capitalist Pig and I decided to take them up on it.
Kevin from exurbanleague.com was a peach, and kind enough to meet us out at Usery Mountain Shooting Range on Friday. As a member, Kevin was able to get us a discount on the range fee (and we LOVE discounts), and it only cost us 5 bucks each.
Kevin did a fantastic job of teaching me proper range and gun saftey, and we even got some lessons on how to shoot competition practical pistol (which was very cool!). Since I’m very new to owning and using firearms, this trip was invaluable to me, and I highly recommend Kevin’s offer to anyone out there who wants to learn the PROPER way to use firearms.
If you’re not close to Kevin, and want to learn, there is a great site where you can find a map of people who offer “Hands-on” instruction in a safe, controlled environment.
The image above is the target that I shot with my recently purchased Ruger 10/22. This is the second time I’ve shot with it, and I just love it (the rifle and shooting it). I think I’m doing pretty darn well for a beginner, but you can decide for yourself.
Thanks again to Kevin for the great instruction and opportunity!

The Tax Day Tea Party brought several thousand people to Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza today. It was impossible to get a count of the attendees, as we saw a steady stream of people both arriving and leaving for the two hours that we were at the event. I’m thinking there were ten thousand there easily.
A very large group of people crammed into an area in front of the Capitol Building where politicians, concerned citizens and radio and TV hosts were speaking. It was so crowded in that area that we were never able to actually see who was speaking, so we chose to mill around the crowd and take some photos for your viewing pleasure.
We’ll be writing more about the event itself within the next few days, but I wanted to leave you with the best quotes of the day:
A woman holding a sign in one hand and a cell phone to her ear:
I’m standing in front of the capitol with fifty thousand other people and they all hate Obama.
This one is our favorite:
If I would have known that protesting would be this much fun, I would have done it in the ’60’s instead of starting to protest in my sixties.
Some general crowd shots:
Just some of the many clever and creative signs (we’ll post more later):
We would like to dedicate this one to the exurbanleague.com guys:
I’ll post some more tomorrow, but I’ll leave you with this one. I haven’t decided what is more humorous – seeing “hippies” at the Tea Party, or the camera crew grabbing them out of the crowd and making a fuss over them. I might normally say that they got lost on their way to a Phish concert, but they did have Tea Party signs :
P.S. – If you didn’t already know it, Arizona is a beautiful place:

Today’s Great Satan Inc. American Exceptionalism award goes to the US Navy Seals for rescuing the US captain that was held hostage by Somalian pirates this past week. We can’t thank our military enough for all that they do to keep us safe and free!
On a related note, one of our favorite blogs, Exurban League, wrote a sharp and witty parody about Obama reaching out to the ‘moderate’ pirate community that’s more than worth the read:
Obama Reaches Out to ‘Moderate’ Pirate Community
Thanks for making us laugh today, guys!

Here’s something the MSM has failed to mention so far about the incident in Pittsburgh today where 3 police officers were killed.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette made quick reference to the fact that the shooter, Richard Poplawski was dishonorably discharged from Marine Corps. basic training. The Department of Treasury Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms document TD ATF-391 states:
Section 922(g)(6) of the GCA makes it unlawful for persons who have
been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions to receive or possess firearms.
Richard Poplawski was a convicted felon, and could not have legally owned firearms. The guns that were used in Saturday’s shootings had to have been obtained illegally.
So, why is this important? Because the recent tragedies that have involved firearms could be the perfect excuse for the current administration to enact the “common sense” gun laws (meaning bans and restrictions on firearms for people who don’t commit felonies) that Obama has stated he favors.
Pennsylvania State and Federal firearms laws already in place, as well as any future gun laws would not have stopped this horrible occurrence today because Poplawski broke several of these laws in order to commit his heinous crimes. Only the responsible, law-abiding gun owner will be effected by more gun bans and restrictions, while the criminals will enjoy a climate where they can produce more victims.
Ed. Note: We are very saddened today by the events that occurred in Pittsburgh. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones. This article is not meant in any way to condone or justify Mr. Poplawski’s actions, which we find abhorrent. It is our hope that he is severely punished in our world, as well as the next.

President Obama visited Dobson High School in Mesa, Arizona today to announce his $75 BILLION mortgage relief plan. Local media stories reported the crowd size as “more than 500”, but we estimate that the crowd was easily in the thousands. It was very difficult to find even one sign or person that was outwardly showing their support of the president or his policies, but there was no shortage of people expressing their anger and frustration with the new administration’s plans.
Exurban League has more welcoming committee photos from the visit. Michelle Malkin also has some great shots and comments at Michelle Malkin .com

This is a funny 60 minutes spoof of a “No Child Left Behind” PSA by a rapper named “Phat Man”. The video clip is from David Alan Grier’s “Chocolate News” show.
Warning – this video contains salty bleeped language and MTV style hip hop video content.
Why do they hate us?
