The film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, was a jam packed theater experience. Our Cliff Notes review of the movie is: let go of your expectations, open your mind, and go see it! Now! What are you waiting for? Are you waiting for the theater to open? Go now! Okay, okay, please go see this movie at your earliest convenience.
Back to the short-attention-span review, you could read a poncy, pretentious movie critique, or you can take our word. Atlas Shrugged is a good, dramatic movie, with a message based on your choosing. If you’ve read all 1,350 plus pages of the book, you will no doubt notice some deviation from the original story. There’s a bit of a love interest that should keep a slightly vapid date absorbed. There are numerous political themes playing out that should keep your armchair political quarterback friends riveted. Subtle, but important, details are revealed constantly to keep your thinking friends engaged. Finally, there is some great imagery to keep your visually amused friends hanging on for the next camera shot. Make no mistake, this is a sentient person’s movie, unlike Spider-Man 3.
Here’s a clue, take a look at this video of Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. trashing the Apple iPad . Unfortunately, you can only understand the gravity of the vilification of Steve Jobs and Apple if you see Atlas Shrugged.
Whether you think Big Business is evil and we should be protected from greed, or you think that phony conservatives in D.C. will protect you from socialism, you need to see this movie to grasp the consequences of the fashionable merging of Crony Capitalism with the warm hugs of business regulation, done for the Greater Good™.
Very few movies can motivate an entire theater to applaud, but Atlas Shrugged: Part 1 managed to do just that.
Congratulations to Kevin at Exurban League for not only surviving the extremely challenging 2010 Superstition Mountain Mystery 3 Gun Match, but finishing 19th in the Tactical Iron division. SinistralRifleman has posted a comprehensive video of the stages that you may find interesting.
3Gun Stuff has also posted video of Sunday’s 3-Gun Nation Shootoff.
Whew! There’s a slew of shooting events in Arizona this weekend. I’d need a few clones to make it to all of them. The ‘plan’ included a road trip to the Big Sandy Shoot outside of Wikieup, AZ. The Big Sandy Shoot is the biggest machine-gun event in the United States. Spanning three days, the shoot includes flying targets, tracer rounds, pyrotechnics, and lots of automatic fire. You can check out the night shooting on YouTube. R. Lee Ermey featured the Big Sandy Shoot in his Lock ‘N Load television show on The History Channel last week. Unfortunately, a babysitter couldn’t be found for the puppies, so I’ll have to catch the shoot another time.
Another big event this weekend is the Arizona Game & Fish Department’s Outdoor Expo at Ben Avery Shooting Facility. The Outdoor Expo is designed to introduce people, young and old, to the numerous outdoor activities we have available in Arizona. Mz. VRWC was introduced to the various competitive shooting disciplines at this event last year. She’s been hooked on shooting ever since.
The Dillon Aero demonstration at the 2009 Expo
Arizona’s Game & Fish Department is operated on a “user pay, user benefit” business model and receives no Arizona tax dollars (no tax dollars are used in conducting the Expo either). AZ Game & Fish is a Government agency that’s awesome to deal with and views the public as current and future customers.
This huge event includes archery, a catch-and-release fishing tank, ATV and offroad vehicles, birds of prey, hunting field courses and education, as well
Cowboy Action Shooting Bay
as a full range of shooting disciplines that visitors can try for essentially the cost of ammo. You can try your hand at shooting sports such as, the .22 Schoolastic Steel Challenge, rimfire steel, Blackpowder, Cowboy & Cowgirl Action Shooting, youth .22 and airgun competition, practical pistol, silhouette, and you can try Glock, Ruger, and Smith & Wesson guns too. I’m sure I’ll spend way too much time there on Sunday.
The other big shooting event this weekend is the Superstition Mountain Mystery 3-Gun match Rio Solado Sportsman’s Club. This is a huge match with incredibly challenging stages. Exurban Kevin is working and shooting the match. You can check out his posts about it here and here, but the photo he posted here on Twitter really tells the story of how challenging stage nine of eleven is. Cowboy Blob, another gun slinging blogger, was also spotted among the competitors.
If you can’t make it to the three gun match, you’ll be able to watch part of it on Versus, since they were filming the match for their new series, 3 Gun Nation.
We’ve decided to take the plunge and join the hep and cool world of Twitter. We got us some new fangled, fancy phones with a thing-a-majig that slides out so we can text to our heart’s content (which has been about once a century to this point), and keep you updated on all of the going-ons at the NRA Convention in Phoenix this weekend.
So far, we only have two people following us, but wow, what a list so far – exurbanjon and Karl Rove. How awesome is that?
Feel free to follow us at GreatSatanInc, and become part of our illustrious list.
We’ll be adding our tweets to the site very soon so you can follow allong with our oh, so exciting lives. I just have to figure out how to send this, wait, I think I press this button, no – oops, I just deleted that whole message. Uh, I’ll get this thing up and running as soon.
It just so happens that the exurbanleague.com folks reside in the same metro area that we do, and when I saw their generous offer to learn to shoot on their site, Capitalist Pig and I decided to take them up on it.
Kevin from exurbanleague.com was a peach, and kind enough to meet us out at Usery Mountain Shooting Range on Friday. As a member, Kevin was able to get us a discount on the range fee (and we LOVE discounts), and it only cost us 5 bucks each.
Kevin did a fantastic job of teaching me proper range and gun saftey, and we even got some lessons on how to shoot competition practical pistol (which was very cool!). Since I’m very new to owning and using firearms, this trip was invaluable to me, and I highly recommend Kevin’s offer to anyone out there who wants to learn the PROPER way to use firearms.
The image above is the target that I shot with my recently purchased Ruger 10/22. This is the second time I’ve shot with it, and I just love it (the rifle and shooting it). I think I’m doing pretty darn well for a beginner, but you can decide for yourself.
Thanks again to Kevin for the great instruction and opportunity!
